Hyderabad: Having registered a landslide victory in the recently held Assembly elections, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is now gearing up to establish its dominance in Panchayat Raj elections.
Panchayat Raj elections are scheduled to be held in three phases on January 21, January 25 and January 30. The TRS party has evolved a strategy to not only win the elections, but to ensure unanimous election of Sarpanch in maximum number of Gram Panchayats. In the elections held in 2013, as many as 662 Sarpanches were elected unanimously. This time, the TRS wants this number to be at least doubled.
While there were 8,778 Gram Panchayats in 2013 elections, this time their number if 12,732. This is due to the conversion of Tribal Tandas into Gram Panchayats. TRS want at least 10% of these Panchayats to elect their Sarpanch unanimously by offering sops like Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh grant to Panchayat depending upon their population.
TRS Working President K. Tarakarama Rao has announced that he would provide funds from Constituency Development Fund to Panchayats which elect their Sarpanch unanimously in his Sircilla Assembly constituency. Chennur MLA Balka Suman followed the suit and announced that he would give Rs. 50 lakh for the purpose in his constituency. Experts feel that the TRS might succeed in having unanimous elections in many reserved Gram Panchayat.
While TRS is planning to field strong candidates, Congress and other opposition parties are yet to finalise their strategies for Panchayat Raj elections.
